‘Free Guy’ is a Film Every Gamer Must Watch • PickAMovieForMe.com

In general, movies based on video games are rarely worth watching. From the massive failure of 1993 Super Mario Bros to modern disappointments like 2016 Assassin’s Creedmost video game films were critical and failed at the box office. Although this is not based on a specific game, Free People breaks the mold of mediocrity and ends up as one of the best video game movies ever. Directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, and more, the film offers an explosive and hilarious take on the massively multiplayer online game. Taking inspiration from general gaming culture as well as specific games like it Grand Theft Auto and popular online games such as World of Warcraft, Free People successfully bridges the gap between games and films. While it’s not the most innovative or original film of the year, it’s hard to deny that Free People is one of the best video game movies.

How ‘Free People‘ Success as a Video Game Movie

Free People tells the story of Guy (Ryan Reynolds), a bank teller who enjoys his simple life in the violent city of Free City. Stupid but charming, Guy follows the same routine every day while chaos reigns around him, all at the hands of wasteful criminals wearing sunglasses. Unbeknownst to Guy, he is actually a background character in the online multiplayer game “Free City”, where players are free to loot, shoot and kill to their heart’s content. Despite their bloodthirsty nature, Guy’s programming makes it clear that he views them as heroes, happy to sit on the sidelines while they work their destructive magic. However, Guy’s world is turned upside down when he picks up a pair of sunglasses and puts them on, revealing a world of play around him. To understand his true nature and fulfill his destiny, Guy must go on a bombastic adventure with “Molotovgirl”/Millie (Jodie Comer), a real player who is looking for valuable secrets in the game world.

When compared to other blockbuster action films, Free People it’s mostly predictable, but its unique tone and apt representation of gaming culture are commendable. To complete his mission, Guy must join other players in Free City, level up and gain experience by participating in events around the city. Due to his well-intentioned program, Guy refuses to commit any crimes, which quickly makes him stand out among other players. Soon, Guy’s actions begin to have real-world repercussions, raising concerns among the game’s developers. Hidden among the slapstick comedy and juvenile humor is a compelling story about artificial intelligence, good versus evil, and chasing your dreams.

In addition to its exciting action sequences and likable characters, Free People succeeds thanks to the constant nods to the video games that served as its inspiration. Keen-eyed viewers will notice many of the game’s Easter eggs, including popular weapons from similar games Gate And Half Timeas well as funny dances from similar games Fortnite. More than most other video game films, Free People seems to understand the isolating humor of gaming culture, but makes it relatable to a non-gaming audience.

My Final Thoughts on ‘Free People’

Overall, Free People is an entertaining comedy with lots of awesome action moments, played to make you laugh and awe. Even though some of the CGI is less than stellar, the film does a good job of realizing its world and filling it with fun characters and interesting ideas. Ryan Reynolds is perfect in the lead role of Guy, and the supporting cast is also excellent. I really enjoyed Taika Waititi as Antwan, the annoying but hilarious president of the Free City game development team. Between the many nods to popular games and a very gripping story, Free People effectively balances drama and action while remaining engaging throughout its two-hour runtime. Apart from a mediocre romantic subplot and some forgettable scenes, Free People is one of the best video game movies of all time and a must-watch for any gamer with a sense of humor.
