Kiai Abbas Buntet Islamic Boarding School Tomb

The trail article this time summarizes a glimpse of the pilgrimage trip to the tomb of Kiai Abbas Abdul Jamil who is in the Gajah Ngambung Cemetery Complex near Pondok Buntet Pesantren in Mertapada Kulon Village, Astanajapura District, Cirebon Regency, West Java.

This time we did the pilgrimage in the second week of July 2025 with the family of pilgrims in the departure year 2019

The pilgrimage journey starts from the burial complex or Maqbarah Masyayikh Al Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding School Kesugihan Cilacap. In the Maqbarah, we visited the elderly scholars in Cilacap Regency such as KH Badawi Hanafi, KH Mustholih Badawi and KH Chasbullah Badawi with Dzurriyatnya.

After traveling about 4 hours from Cilacap to Cirebon, we arrived at Pondok Buntet Pesantren. Then performed the evening prayer at the Buntet Pesantren Mosque which according to history was founded in 1750 by Kiai Muqoyyim, founder of Buntet Islamic Boarding School.

Pondok Buntet Pesantren Mosque has a unique blend of Javanese and Chinese architecture. Is a building that reflects the results of the acculturation process between the Pesantren Buntet and Chinese ethnic community.

Pilgrimage to kiai abbas

After performing the evening prayer, we walked along the boarding boarding school complex to the tomb location. Namely in the funeral of the Gajah Ngambung. The trip is no more than 5 minutes. But because of the night condition, we walked slowly.

Cemeteries (Maqbarah, Pesarean) Gajah Ngambung is a public burial place for villagers as well as a place of pilgrimage. But in the tomb area there is a special burial complex for the large family of Pondok Buntet Pesantren. Including the tomb of Kiai Abbas Abdul Jamil in the Gajah Ngambung Cemetery Complex which is the purpose of pilgrimage.

Kiai Abbas, National Hero

Kiai Abbas Abdul Jamil is a major charismatic scholar, has strength professional and a fighter of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Masyhur in the story and history, Kiai Abbas is very instrumental in the Battle of November 10, 1945 in Surabaya.

For the services and role of his struggle, Kiai Abbas Abdul Jamil is in the process of proposal to be determined as a national hero. A week before we made a pilgrimage, the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia was also a pilgrimage to the grave of Kiai Abbas.

The Ministry of Social Affairs (Ministry of Social Affairs) together with the Research Team and Review of the Central Level Title (TP2GP) made a verification visit to Pondok Buntet Pesantren, Cirebon. The visit on Friday (4/7/2025), was part of the verification process of the proposal of KH Abbas Abdul Jamil as a national hero.

We pray for him, hopefully later Kiai Abbas Abdul Jamil Buntet Pesantren Cirebon, really gets the title of National Hero. So that it adds to the list of national heroes from the scholars in the West Java region. We recognize, two major scholars of West Java have won the title of national hero, namely KH Zainal Mustafa (Tasikmalaya) and KH Abdul Chalim (Majalengka).
