Driving an Electric Car to Georgia? Consider Shipping Instead – Here’s Why

EVs or Electric Vehicles are on the rise in recent years – which, in truth, isn’t that surprising given that companies like Tesla are making headline after headline. EVs, as they say, are the cars of the future. The type you would often see in sci-fi movies back in the 80s. And now, it has been materialized.

There are many advantages to driving an electric vehicle. With electricity as its main power source, it’s more environmentally friendly as it produces little to no carbon emissions which we all know contribute massively to global warming (see here). It’s also considered to be more cost-efficient, especially with the cost of gasoline ballooning like crazy due to inflating oil prices.

But just as it has its pros, it also has its cons which we will be discussing in this article today. Particularly, we’ll be discussing the drawbacks of driving an electric vehicle across long distances as in the case of traveling or moving to another state, like Georgia.

EV Batteries Empty Faster

While electric cars are indeed more practical in terms of maintenance and fuel costs, it also has its limitations.

A standard EV like the Peugeot e-208 can run for about 220 miles before it would need recharging. Tesla, on the other hand, even with the higher end models, can run about 400 miles before its battery runs low. This is almost 50% shorter than the distance a gasoline-powered vehicle can cover which can go up to 700 miles on full tank. These numbers can even fluctuate depending on your power consumption (e.g. using the radio, charging ports, air-conditioning, etc.).

Normally, this wouldn’t be much of a problem given how a person only drives about 20 miles per day on average. But in this scenario, we are talking about city driving – traveling to and from work, getting groceries, going to convenience stores, etc. If we switch over to long distance driving, using an EV will put you at a big disadvantage.

For example, driving from California to Georgia takes 36 hours or 2,454 miles as per Gmaps. This means over 6 recharges even with the latest and best EV model. Driving 36 hours looks like a daunting task by itself already. Stopping every now and again to recharge for half an hour at the least? Nightmare.

Recharging Takes Longer

As mentioned above, the average time it takes to recharge an electric vehicle is 30 minutes, or longer as you can see here: https://www.straitstimes.com/life/motoring/torque-shop-how-long-does-it-take-to-charge-an-ev. Sure, one can argue that they can do other things during the 30 minutes that they still would have to do even if they were driving a normal car, but that can get old pretty fast especially when you have to get off every 200 miles or so. Filling up a gas tank, on the other hand, takes about 5 minutes tops and you can already grab a hotdog in that span of time.

Recharging Stations Are Limited

Although EVs have become more mainstream compared to 10 years ago, the number of recharging stations available can still be considered limited compared to normal gas stations which seem to pop up everywhere.

In major cities and populous areas, recharging stations may be readily available in convenient locations. However, they won’t be as present on interstate highways and roads. Just the thought of being stranded in the middle of nowhere because your car ran out of battery is terrifying. Worse is when your car decides to retire early and break down. After all, the chances of finding a technician for an EV in less populated areas isn’t very promising.

While you can bring backup power with you, that too can be an inconvenience if you’re moving to Georgia and can use all the space you need for your luggage.

Why You Should Ship Instead

Now that we’ve warned you about the risks, allow us to present you with a solution as well. We call it car shipping.

Car Shipping basically means having your vehicle delivered to a destination address as you would a normal package. There are auto transport companies Georgia that specialize in these types of deliveries across the US and prices are often computed based on your car’s model, how much it weighs, and the distance they need to cover to get your car to its destination. It’s a practical solution to those who prioritize their personal convenience and their car’s safety during transit.

Instead of racking your brain trying to figure out how you can make a 2000+ miles long distance drive work, leave it to the professionals. An electronic car is wonderful to have; it’s a practical car that requires little to no maintenance. The fact that it helps reduce carbon emission is incredible too. However, wait until it gets to Georgia before driving it to your heart’s content. Until then, entrust it to your car shipping company of choice for safe transport and delivery.
